London Marathon

The inaugural London Marathon took place in 1981. From the beginning it was an extremely popular race and is always massively over-subscribed. The event is watched by millions of TV viewers every year and is the largest charity event outside of America.

London Marathon Route
Having changed very slightly over the years, the London Marathon follows a path well-known to anyone lucky enough to have taken part.

The TCS London Marathon starts in Greenwich Park, next to the Greenwich Observatory. Runners then make their way through Woolwich, past the Thames Barrier and then Cutty Sark. They will then continue towards Bermondsy. At the twelve-mile point they will see Tower Bridge, which they cross before turning right towards Canary Wharf. Next on towards Limehouse and the 20-miles stage, where many runners may 'hit the wall' as their bodies run out of energy. Those who continue will pass the Tower of London, run along Embankment, past the Houses of Parliament and past Nelson's Column reaching the final 500m along Birdcage Walk, past Buckingham Palace and over the finish line to the sound of well-deserved cheers.
